Adjusting to life with dentures means rediscovering the joy of eating. While modern dentures allow you to enjoy a wide variety of foods, there are certain foods that can make eating challenging or even damage your dentures. At Christina Brinda in North Canton, we want to help you navigate your diet. As a dentist who specializes in dentures, Dr. Christina Brinda via this blog, offers tips on foods to cautiously eat, especially when you’re new to wearing dentures.
Foods to Avoid or Eat with Caution
Very Sticky Foods
Why to avoid
Caramel, taffy, gummy candies or even some sticky breads can easily adhere to your dentures. These foods will cause them to dislodge or lift. This can be embarrassing if it were to happen in public or around your friends and disrupt your meal.
Alternatives
Opt for smoother desserts like yogurt or even ice cream.
Hard Foods
Why to avoid
Nuts, popcorn kernels, hard candies, or ice can exert too much pressure on your dentures. This pressure can lead to cracks, chips and may lead all the way to breakage. Popcorn kernels can also get trapped under your dentures, causing painful irritation.
Alternatives
Choose softer snacks like cheese, bananas, cooked vegetables.
Tough Meats
Why to avoid
While you can enjoy meat, very tough cuts of steak, jerky can be difficult to chew effectively with dentures. They require a lot of force, which can dislodge your dentures and strain your jaw.
Alternatives
Opt for tender cuts of fish, poultry, ground meats, slow-cooked meats that are easier to chew. Cut all meats into small, bite-sized pieces.
Crunchy or Raw Vegetables and Fruits
Why to avoid
Biting directly into a whole apples or carrot, even corn on the cob can cause your dentures to lift or break. The force required can also put uneven pressure on your gums.
Alternatives
Cut raw fruits and vegetables into small pieces. Steam or cook vegetables to soften them.
Small Seeds and Grains
Why to avoid
Tiny seeds (i.e. sesame, poppy, chia seeds) and small grains can easily get trapped under your dentures. These tiny seeds can cause irritation and discomfort.
Alternatives
Be mindful of foods with tiny particles. If you do eat them, be prepared to clean your dentures thoroughly afterward.

Tips for Enjoying Your Meals with Dentures
- The golden rule for most foods is to cut food into small pieces.
- Chew slowly and evenly. This will distribute chewing pressure on both sides of your mouth to keep your dentures stable.
- Stay hydrated by drinking water during meals. Hydration can also help wash away food particles.
- Maintain a good fit by regularly check with your dentist who specialize in dentures to ensure your dentures fit well. A loose denture will make eating much harder.

General Dentist Brinda is the best dentist I ever been to . If you’ve been holding off going to the dentist, whether for just cleaning or getting wisdom teeth out , go here . The staff is so welcoming and friendly and Dr. Brinda is so knowledgeable and walked me through every procedure from start to finish and all the expectations. She is a perfectionist that wants you to look your best and goes out of her way to do just that . I went in for a whitening treatment and cleaning and it was the best experience that I had at a dental practice! I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to feel comfortable, well cared for and informed, while receiving best treatment for their smile.

Dr. Brinda is hands down the best dentist I’ve ever been to! My wife and I live in Michigan and we make the drive every year to go see her because she’s that good! Whether it’s going in for cleaning/whitening or taking care of a cavity, I always have a great experience going here. I’ve never really enjoyed going to the doctor for anything, but I can honestly say I enjoy coming here for my yearly checkups. Dr. Brinda is very knowledgeable and extremely professional, and she goes out of her way to make people feel welcome and cared for. Highly highly recommend!

Dr. Brinda and her amazing office team are lovely; down to earth and outstandingly competent. Their main focus, I have no doubt from all of my visits, is their patient’s oral health. This team is professional and efficient, but also what we all want in a medical team of any sort, very knowledgeable. I truly appreciate all of the care and concern this office has offered me. This is truly a top notch team and one you can thoroughly entrust with your dental health. Thank you to you all.

I personally was shadowing Dr. Brinda's office for my Dental Hygienist Program, and it was an amazing experience! Dr.Brinda and her wonderful team are constantly working to make sure things are sterilized, wiped down, and organized for your visit! There was nobody sitting around, but everyone was helping other people out! Staff at Dr. Brinda's office was respectful, sweet and supportive! Dr. Brinda personally took time with patients, and treated them like a person, not just a patient. She asked recurring patients about an update on their personal lives from the patients last visit, and it was amazing to see the patients smile when she remembered. Overall, from someone who saw behind the scenes of this office, I would gladly come there to visit just to see the amazing work they do. I highly recommend Dr. Brinda's Office!
