Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any existing fillings or crowns. Replacement of any fillings will be done after bleaching so that the existing teeth will match the newly whitened teeth.
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed every six months or so. If the patient is a smoker or drinks coffee, tea, or wine then touch-ups will need to be more often.
Reasons for whitening:
• Yellow and brown stained teeth.
• Excessive fluoridation during tooth development known as fluorosis.
• Stained teeth due to medications.
• Everyday wear of enamel or outer tooth layer.
